In Japan, everyone who needs to renew their driver's license is required to take a driver's safety lecture course. There are 4 categories,
1) "優良" (Safe driver)
2) "一般" (General driver)
3) "違反" (Traffic offender)
4) "初回" (First-time renewal)
Your category is decided by your traffic violation record and traffic accident record.
About 1 month before your driver's license is to expire, you should receive a renewal notice (a postcard) by mail.
Your category is printed on the notice in Japanese. Your required lecture course will correspond with the category as noted from your driver's record.
Please confirm and check which type of lecture you are to attend.
It takes a few days to issue a renewal license. We will notify you of the issue date after all of the following procedures have been completed.
Required
The following documents are required when you go to the station.
1) Renewal Notice (post card)
2) Driver's License
3) Photo (head shot)
length 3 centimeters, width 2.4 centimeters
There is no photo booth in the Misawa police station.
4) Residence Card
Before coming to the station, please check your card for the following:
Is the address of your residence card correct?
Is it the same as the driver's license?
If it is not, you are required to update it first.
Fee (JPY, cash only)
The fees vary according to your driver's category.
1) "優良" (Safe driver) 3,000 yen
2) "一般" (General driver) 3,300 yen
3) "違反" (Traffic offender) 3,850 yen
4) "初回" (First-time renewal) 3,850 yen
At the Station
You are required to do the following:
1) Fill out the required documents
2) Take a Vision Test
3) Join the Driver's Safety Lecture
Steps 1 and 2 can be done at any time however day/time for step 3 is fixed.

Wednesdays: 0915-0945/1000-1030
Thursdays: 0915-0945/1000-1030
2) "一般" (General driver)
Wednesdays: 1045-1145
3) "違反" (Traffic offender)
the 1st,2nd,4th,5th Wednesdays: 1330-1530
4) "初回" (First-time renewal)
the 3rd Wednesday: 1330-1530
